Rewards of My Visit to the Library

sarahlhn

I have been overseas for 14 years. One of the things that I am grateful when I returned back to Singapore is free service offered by the library in Singapore and for the vast range of books that the library keeps. The books I noticed are also well maintained. Such a privilege and facility is definitely not easily available in the country I had resided then.

An one and hour visit to the library lifts my spirit up. I am really surprised.

I am happy with my loans. One Chinese book on controlling of blood pressure for my mother. One book on "The Community Cat Chronicles 3” printed in 2022, for my younger daughter who loves animals. The two books on : “People with Dementia speak out and “The Gift of Dyslexia” are books on neurology and brain related books that I am interested in. The rest are short fantasy books and even this book “Life on the Refrigerator Door” is an easy book to read as it consists of notes left by the mother and daughter on the Fridge door. Not too many words to browse through.

I hope my life with my mother will not end up like this “on the Fridgedoor” where our communication is based on notes and not face to face communication.

A sense of gratitude filled my heart as I came back from the library.

I just felt that I need to pen down my thanksgiving list in this blog today.

So grateful that though my mother was down with a slight flu this Chinese New Year season, the doctor had said it was nothing serious. In this sudden cool weather in Singapore, I just ensure that she took her medications, rest, drink warm drink, wear sweater at home when the cool wind blows and even encourage her to sleep in her socks.

I hope that you too would be surprised with the short break that you can take this month despite the busyness of the festive season. Hopefully that your other family member can come in to provide respite for you. Even Dementia Day Care centre now provide respite for weekends and nights as well. Do plan out time for yourself so that you can be refreshed.

For me, I am going to continue reading my new book “ Life on the Refrigerator Door” while ensuring that my mother takes her meal, enjoys her book that I have just borrowed from the library.

Keep Thriving. Thriving Caregivers.
